COURSE CONTENT:
Biology: Stage 1 Biology has two major fields of study, Human Physiology and Ecology
Human Physiology aims to provide students with an understanding of the living world through the study of living organisms with particular emphasis on Macromolecules and Cells, Reproduction and Genetics and Human Physiology. Practical and communication skills will be developed along with an understanding of biological facts, concepts and principles. Discussion will also include an awareness of the implications and social effects of developments in biotechnology. Students will have the opportunity to engage with the work of biologists and to participate in discussions about how biology impacts on their lives, on society, and on the environment.
Students will design, conduct, gather evidence and interpret practical investigations, research and present a social issues investigation and demonstrate their learning through topic tests. The focus capabilities for this subject are communication and learning.
Ecology aims to provide students with an understanding of the living world through the study of living organisms with particular emphasis on Classification, Ecosystems and Marine Biology. Students will learn about the interaction between organisms and the environment, both terrestrial and marine. They have the opportunity to engage with the work of biologists and to participate in discussions about how biology impacts on their lives, on society, and on the environment.
Students will design, conduct, gather evidence and interpret practical investigations, research and present a social issues investigation and demonstrate their learning through topic tests and an end of semester examination
The focus capabilities for this subject are communication and learning.
The teaching and learning program will include an excursion to the Botanic Gardens of Adelaide and snorkelling on the Pt Nourlunga reef.
